ArchivalResource

Poetical miscellany of H. Watkins [manuscript], ca. 1780.

Excerpts from English and Latin poets, chiefly of the 16th to 18th centuries. Extracts from Shakespeare occupy leaves 20-40. To judge from the changes in handwriting this commonplace book took many years to compile. Some of it was copied after 1775; Thomas Penrose's Flights of fancy was published in that year (cf. fo. 152r). The book was begun on leaf 20v. Leaves 1-19 were reserved for an index and provided with thumbtabs, but matter proving too abundant these were eliminated and the preliminary leaves used for the last-copied pieces.

155 leaves ; 20 x 16 cm.

William Shakespeare was likely born April, 23, 1564; he was baptized in Stratford-upon-Avon on April 26, 1564. He grew up, had a family, and bought property in Stratford while working in London, the center of English theater. As an actor, a playwright, and a partner in a leading acting company, he became both prosperous and well-known. His parents were John and Mary Shakespeare. John was a leatherworker and involved in local politics, first becoming an alderman and eventually a town bailiff. ...
